Over Atlasgebergte
Drie gebieden trekken de meeste bezoekers. Imlil, op 1.740 meter, is het startpunt voor de Toubkal en de uitvalsbasis voor dorpswandelingen zonder technische moeilijkheid. De Ourika-vallei ligt dichter bij Marrakech, is groener en in het weekend druk met Marokkaanse gezinnen. De Aït Bougmez-vallei, verder naar het oosten en veel minder bezocht, is de juiste keuze als je wandeldagen wilt zonder andere groepen.
De dorpen hier zijn Amazigh (Berber), en op straat spreekt men eerder Tashelhit dan Arabisch. Terrasakkers met walnoot- en kersenbomen klimmen tegen de hellingen op en lemen huizen zijn in de helling gebouwd. De Tizi n'Tichka-pas, op 2.260 meter, is de wegverbinding tussen Marrakech en het zuiden. Elke woestijnrondreis gaat eroverheen, dus zelfs reizigers die geen bergtijd hadden ingepland, zien de Hoge Atlas goed. De weg is volledig verhard en sinds de recente verbreding eenvoudig te berijden.

Kun je het Atlasgebergte als dagtocht vanuit Marrakech bezoeken?
Zeker. Imlil en de Ourika-vallei liggen allebei op zo'n anderhalf uur van de stad, wat genoeg tijd laat voor een dorpswandeling, lunch en een terugrit dezelfde avond. Voor de top van de Toubkal heb je minstens twee dagen nodig.
Moet je fit zijn om in de Hoge Atlas te wandelen?
