Over Marrakech
De stad valt duidelijk in tweeën uiteen. De medina is de historische, ommuurde kern: souks, riads, madrassa's en de eetkraampjes in de open lucht die Jemaa el-Fna elke avond vullen. Guéliz, de nieuwere wijk uit de tijd van het Franse protectoraat, heeft bredere straten, restaurants en de Jardin Majorelle. Wie in de medina verblijft, zit het dichtst bij de bezienswaardigheden, maar komt te voet aan: auto's kunnen de meeste riads niet bereiken.
Marrakech is ook het belangrijkste vertrekpunt voor de zuidelijke routes. De weg over de Tizi n'Tichka-pas naar Ouarzazate en de Sahara begint hier, net als de kortere route de Hoge Atlas in, richting Imlil en de Ourika-vallei. Vrijwel elke rondreis met de woestijn begint of eindigt in Marrakech.
