Over Essaouira
De stad is merkbaar ontspannener dan Marrakech. De straten zijn recht en breed, de zeelucht houdt de temperatuur zelfs in augustus laag en het tempo ligt lager. De stadsmuren langs de Skala de la Ville kijken direct uit over de Atlantische Oceaan, en de vissershaven brengt nog elke ochtend de vangst binnen, die bij de kraampjes naast de haven wordt verkocht en gegrild.
Essaouira heeft een lange band met muziek — het Gnaoua World Music Festival trekt elk jaar in juni grote menigten — en met houtbewerking, vooral thuja, het gevlamde cederhout dat in werkplaatsen door de hele medina wordt bewerkt.
