Over Chefchaouen
Het blauw is de trekpleister en dat weet de stad, maar Chefchaouen is ook buiten de foto's om echt aangenaam. Het is rustiger en koeler dan de keizerssteden, de medina is zo klein dat verdwalen een plezier is in plaats van een probleem, en verkopers zijn merkbaar minder opdringerig dan in Fez of Marrakech.
De verklaringen voor de kleur lopen uiteen: Joodse inwoners die zich hier in de jaren dertig vestigden, een middel tegen muggen, een manier om de huizen koel te houden. Geen enkele verklaring staat vast, en de inwoners vertellen je ze alle drie. De muren worden regelmatig opnieuw geverfd, daarom ziet het blauw er altijd fris uit.
Het mooiste licht is vroeg in de ochtend, voordat rond elf uur de dagjesbussen uit Tanger en Fez arriveren. Blijven overnachten maakt het verschil tussen een gehaaste stop en een goede. Boven de stad ligt de Spaanse moskee, twintig minuten klimmen, met het bekende uitzicht over de blauwe daken bij zonsondergang.
