Over Meknes & Volubilis
Moulay Ismail wilde van Meknes een Marokkaans Versailles maken, en de schaal van wat hij bouwde laat dat zien — kilometers stadsmuur, stallen die naar verluidt twaalfduizend paarden huisvestten en graanschuren met muren dik genoeg om het graan koel te houden tijdens een Marokkaanse zomer. Bab Mansour, tegenover de Place el-Hedim, geldt algemeen als de mooiste monumentale poort van Noord-Afrika.
Volubilis was het westelijke bestuurscentrum van de Romeinse provincie Mauretania Tingitana, en de mozaïekvloeren zijn grotendeels op hun plek bewaard gebleven, nog altijd onder de open hemel waar ze werden gelegd. Het Capitool, de basiliek en de triomfboog van Caracalla staan nog overeind, en het terrein is in ongeveer anderhalf uur te bekijken. Sinds 1997 staat het op de UNESCO-werelderfgoedlijst.
Moulay Idriss Zerhoun, het witte heuvelstadje tussen de twee, herbergt het graf van de stichter van de eerste islamitische dynastie van Marokko en is een van de belangrijkste bedevaartsoorden van het land. Alle drie combineren levert een volle en evenwichtige dag vanuit Fez op.
