About Tangier
Tangier spent decades as an International Zone administered jointly by several foreign powers, and that history still marks it — a mixed architectural record, a literary reputation built by Bowles, Burroughs and the Beats, and an outlook that faces Europe as much as Africa. Substantial redevelopment of the port and corniche over the last decade has changed the city considerably.
The kasbah occupies the high ground above the medina, and the Kasbah Museum in the former sultan's palace covers the region from prehistory onward. Below it the medina drops towards the Petit Socco, smaller and more manageable than the medinas of Fes or Marrakech.
Cap Spartel, where the two seas meet at the north-west corner of Africa, is fifteen kilometres out of town, with the Caves of Hercules just beside it — a sea cave whose opening, worn into the shape of the African continent, is the most photographed thing in the region.
