About Ouarzazate & Aït Benhaddou
Aït Benhaddou is the reason to stop. The ksar is a cluster of earthen kasbahs stacked up a hillside above the Ounila River, built from rammed earth and straw and continuously repaired for centuries. A handful of families still live inside; the rest is preserved as a monument. Crossing the riverbed and climbing to the granary at the top takes about an hour and gives the view back over the Ounila valley.
Ouarzazate itself is a working town rather than a sight. Atlas Film Studios and CLA Studios are here — Morocco's film industry is genuinely centred on this stretch of desert — and Kasbah Taourirt, once a Glaoui stronghold, is worth thirty minutes. Most travellers eat lunch, look at one of the two, and continue.
The town is the junction for two different southern routes: south-east through Skoura and the Dades Valley towards Merzouga, or south-west down the Draa Valley past Agdz towards Zagora and Erg Chigaga. Which one you take is effectively the decision about which desert you are visiting.
