Detailed Itinerary

Day 1: Into the Valley of Roses

image
Your Marrakech adventure heads south today, crossing the High Atlas Mountains via the spectacular Tizi n'Tichka pass — one of the highest mountain roads in North Africa. The views are dramatic: terraced Berber villages cling to cliffsides, ancient mule tracks wind down into deep valleys, and the air grows crisp as you climb above 2,200 meters.

As you descend toward the pre-Saharan south, the landscape shifts into arid plains dotted with crumbling ksour and river valleys thick with oleander. Pass through the Valley of Roses — famous across Morocco for its annual May rose harvest — before arriving in Skoura, a verdant oasis of palm groves and mud-brick kasbahs. Check into your kasbah guesthouse and spend the evening exploring the silent lanes of the palm grove as the setting sun turns the walls a deep terracotta gold.

Day 2: The Road to the Golden Dunes

image
Leave Skoura early and follow the legendary Road of a Thousand Kasbahs eastward — one of the most cinematic drives in all of Morocco. Ancient fortified villages appear around every bend, their earthen towers rising from the desert floor like something from another age.

Pass through the dramatic Dades Gorge, where twisted rock formations locals call "monkey fingers" claw at the sky, and continue south through changing desert landscapes toward Merzouga. By late afternoon, the towering orange dunes of Erg Chebbi appear on the horizon. Swap your vehicle for a camel and trek gently into the dunes as the sun begins to melt into the sand. At your luxury desert camp, Berber hosts welcome you with mint tea. After a traditional dinner under the canvas, gather around the campfire for drumming and stories. Sleep in a comfortable tent as the Milky Way stretches overhead in breathtaking clarity.

Day 3: Sunrise, Gorges, and the Fortress at the End of the World

image
Wake before dawn to watch the Sahara transform — the dunes shift from deep purple to amber to blinding gold as the sun rises over the Algerian horizon. Return by camel to Merzouga for breakfast and a refreshing shower before heading west.

Your route today follows the southern gorge road through Todra Gorge, where sheer limestone walls rise 300 meters above the canyon floor — a natural cathedral that stops even seasoned travelers in their tracks. Continue through the Valley of Draa before arriving at Ait Ben Haddou, the most dramatic fortified village in Morocco. This UNESCO World Heritage ksar — built from the very earth it stands on — has served as the backdrop for Gladiator, Game of Thrones, and The Mummy. Climb through its ancient passages at golden hour, when the light turns the walls the color of fire, and feel centuries of Saharan trade history beneath your feet. Overnight in a nearby guesthouse with views over the ksar.

Day 4: Over the Atlas and Back to Marrakech

image
Your final morning at Ait Ben Haddou is the best time to see it — before tour groups arrive, the ksar is quiet and extraordinary. Take a last walk through the lower village or simply sit with a coffee and watch the early light move across the earthen towers.

Then it's back over the High Atlas via Tizi n'Tichka — but this time the views feel different, knowing what lies on the other side. You'll descend into Marrakech by early afternoon, with time for a final walk through the souks, a hammam visit, or simply a mint tea on a rooftop terrace overlooking the Koutoubia minaret before your departure transfer. Four days, four landscapes — the southern circuit of Morocco, done as it should be.
